OLEV Grant for flat owners and renters - what can I claim?

Changes to the OLEV Grant came in to effect on the 1 April 2022. However, if you are a homeowner living in a flat or someone renting a flat or single-use property, you are still eligible to receive grant funding.

Beginning 1 April 2022, renters and leaseholders can receive a grant of up to £350 per person to purchase and install a charge point. However, the renter must have an electric vehicle and off-street parking to be eligible for the assistance. Additionally, the renter will also need to have their own electric meter and power supply.

The UK government's purpose for making this change is two-fold. As the country transitions from gas-powered to electric-powered vehicles, there is hope this new grant will drive up sales among renters and leaseholders. In addition, it provides access to charging points for people living in multi-unit buildings and more densely populated areas.

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) maintains a list of eligible vehicles under the grant. This list contains not only cars but also eligible motorcycles and vans. If your car is not on the list, contact the manufacturer so they can contact the OZEV and have it added.

Only OZEV-approved installers can apply for the grant on behalf of the renter or leaseholder.

History of the OLEV Grant?

The UK government is funding a package worth £2.8 billion in its effort to support businesses and individuals in making the transition from vehicles that use petrol to electric cars. Because the office changed its name to the Office of Zero-Emission Vehicles in late 2020, you may know it as the OZEV Grant.

Even if the name has changed, it still has the same intent: encourage the use of electric cars that cause less air pollution and promote a cleaner and greener environment. Since its inception, the grant has targeted individual homeowners, but that is all about to change.

Who No Longer Benefits From the OZEV Grant?

Suppose you are a homeowner looking to take advantage of the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). Since the 1st April 2022 individual homeowners have lost thier eligibility.

However, if you are a homeowner living in a flat or someone renting a flat or single-use property, you are still eligible to receive grant funding.

The UK government has seen a substantial increase in the number of electric vehicles on the road and now wants to shift the OZEV grant to other population segments, specifically in more populated areas.
